An argument against abortion

Pace the abortionist, from the armchair:

1. One necessary feature of being a human is that it has to only have one nature.

2. The nature of an ovum is numerically different from the nature of a sperm.

3. An ovum has one necessary feature of being a human in that it has to only have one nature.

4. But a human is not an ovum.

5. A sperm has one necessary feature of being a human in that it has to only have one nature.

6. But a human is not a sperm.

7. A human is not a sperm and an ovum considered as numerically different natures (follows from premises 1 and 2)

8. Only one nature is formed at conception/fertilization from the fusing of the numerically different natures of a sperm and an ovum.

9. Call this only one nature formed at conception/fertilization from the fusing of the numerically different natures of a sperm and an ovum by “N.”

10. So, N has one necessary feature of being a human in that it only has one nature (follows from premises 1, 8 and 9).

11. A thing is either existent or is nonexistent.

12. Minh is an existent human.

13. The N, which made up Minh, never ceased to exist.

14. So, the N, which made up Minh, is in existence now (follows from premises 11, 12, and 13).

15. The N is either outside of Minh or inside Minh or Minh himself while outside of Minh or Minh himself while inside Minh or outside Minh while inside Minh or Minh himself.

16. The N cannot be outside of Minh.

17. The N cannot be inside Minh.

18. The N cannot be Minh himself while outside of Minh.

19. The N cannot be Minh himself while inside Minh.

20. The N cannot be outside Minh while inside Minh.

21. Therefore, the N is Minh himself (follows from exhausting the possibilities shown in premises 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20).

22. It is wrong to kill Minh innocently.

23. So, it is wrong to kill the N innocently (follows from premises 21 and 22).

24. An abortion would have killed the N innocently.

25. So aborting the N innocently would be wrong (follows from premises 23 and 24).

26. There are no relevant differences between Minh’s N and another zygote’s N that would make abortion impermissible in the former and permissible in the latter.

27. Ergo, abortion is wrong.

Happy (Late) National Life Day!
