NO rosary during eucharistic adoration [exposition]

    1. The USCCB’s words

“The Stations of the Cross is an ancient and venerable devotion which is designed to foster a devotion to and meditation on the mystery of the Passion of Christ. As commendable as such a devotion may be, it can never fulfill the purpose of Eucharistic adoration, that is to draw us more deeply into the mystery of Christ’s presence in the Holy Eucharist. Therefore, neither the Stations of the Cross nor any other devotion should be prayed during exposition of the Eucharist" (citation:

    2. No Rosary during adoration:

  • Note that the Rosary is a devotion according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church 1674: "Besides sacramental liturgy and sacramentals, catechesis must take into account the forms of piety and popular devotions...in various forms of piety...such as...the stations of the cross...the rosary..." (see also: 2678, 2708, 971)
  • The Diocese of London says:
    "
Popular Devotions, even one as highly esteemed as the Rosary (or novenas, etc.), are not acts of the Church's public liturgical worship as such, and so the legislation clearly discourages the use of devotional prayer to the blessed Virgin Mary or the rest of the saints as the verbal common prayer at an exposition. The reason for this is that prayer at an exposition is focused upon Christ, rather than on the Blessed Virgin Mary or the saints

What about Scripture reading?

  • The same USCCB guideline notes that To nourish personal prayer, there may be readings from Sacred Scripture with a homily or brief exhortation, which lead to a better appreciation of the Eucharistic Mystery."
